World’s Largest Online Wine Marketplace Taps Terrain in Chief Operating Officer Search

First launched as an app likened to the “Shazam of wines,” Vivino lets users scan bottles of wine in real life to find ratings and prices online. After growing its user base by 29,000%, Vivino has expanded to become the “Amazon of wines” with a retail arm that now allows its massive user base to purchase wines through the site.

The significance of this move cannot be overstated. In a recent Yahoo! Finance interview, founder Heini Zachariassen explained, “Wine is not a niche. Wine is a $300 billion dollar business, much bigger than music and books combined.”

But moving into the online retail space and scaling its infrastructure would require a multi-talented Chief Operating Officer to guide Vivino in its next phase. Terrain was brought in to help with the search.

As former President of StubHub, CEO Chris Tsakalakis explains, “the COO for Vivino is an unusual role because it combines issues related to customer service and supply, both first party and third party supply. Terrain did a really good job understanding the unique characteristics needed to fill this position.”

In addition to the professional talents the job demanded, there was another requirement. Vivino wanted to proactively seek out a diverse slate of potential candidates for the role. Aware of the positive impact that comes from including a variety of different perspectives in key positions, Vivino cited diversity and inclusion as a top priority. For Terrain — known for its successful track record on helping clients find a diverse group of talented candidates — this was a welcome ask.

Checking in weekly, the Vivino team were able to closely monitor all candidates in the pipeline, including three whom the CEO had personally invited to apply. In the end, Vivino selected a candidate who was brought in by Terrain. Chris explains,

“Terrain found quite a few interesting candidates in short order. If anything, we were spoiled for choice. I already had a few of my own favorites, but eventually we hired someone they had brought in. That should speak volumes about the quality of candidates they provided.”

Upon finding their ideal COO, Vivino is poised for even bigger success. One can only speculate as to how they may have celebrated their latest hire, but popping open a bottle of their top-rated Altaneve Prosecco Rosé would be as good a guess as any.
